5 Punk Bands and Their Stories

The Clash

A famous quote by bass guitarist Paul Simonon after breaking his bass in the NY Palladium 1979. "The show had gone quite well," says Simonon, "but for me inside, it just wasn't working well, so I suppose I took it out on the bass. If I was smart, I would have got the spare bass and used that one, because it wasn't as good as the one I smashed up."

Paul Simonon was known for not just his music but for his performance on stage. He would often swing his bass around to draw the attention of the audience.  The picture above is the actual bass guitar that is on the over of London Calling in which he smashed. This guitar is now displayed in the Rock and Roll hall of fame.

Sex Pistols

The Sex Pistols are most known for their punk music, attitude and of course Sid Vicious being arrested for the murder of his girlfriend Nancy Spungen in a Manhattan Hotel. The band has a dark history. Sid not only murdered his girlfriend but had made more then one attempt of suicide and other attacks and arrests. When he died a suicide note was left saying  "We had a death pact, and I have to keep my half of the bargain. Please bury me next to my baby. Bury me in my leather jacket, jeans and motorcycle boots Goodbye." He was never buried next to her because she was buried at a Jewish cemetery which would not allow non-Jews to be buried there.

The Sex Pistols were too much for the media at times and some of their songs were banned because of their explicit content. "God Save the Queen" was banned by the BBC but this didn't stop it from becoming a hit song. "Anarchy in the Uk" also became an anthem of the late 70's for angry masses. It's clear to say that their music start a movement in punk music to make it more aggressive.

Bad Brains

Did you know that the Bad Brains were originally a Jazz Fusion band called Mind Power? Their music now is influenced by Reggae beats and Heavy Punk riffs. Their sound was influenced by artists like the Sex Pistols, The Ramones, Dead Boys  but also Bob Marley who they became obsessed with after seeing him live in a concert. They also were called Soul Brains for a while which fit their reggae roots. They settled for the name Bad Brains after the song Bad Brains by The Ramones. Bad Brains had made an influence over the hardcore punk movement with a reggae influence which brought something new to the punk seen. Bands like 311, Rage Against the Machine, Beastie Boys and Red Hot Chili Peppers were all influenced by Bad Brains.

The Ramones

The Ramones are known for influencing the punk rock movement in the 70s. Despite conflicts between Joey and Johnny Ramone regarding difference of life style as well as Johnny taking Joeys girlfriend the band was an success to the punk movement. This band had a lot going against them because of the many conflicts including threats and the many personality clashes of the members it's not surprising they ended in 96 after switching members multiple times. People loved the catchy simple music they wrote. Their music was influenced by a pop sound, movies, Andy Warhol, and "childish innocents."

Joan Jett

She is known as the Godmother of Punk Rock and is another Hall of Famer. Her first successes were with The Runaways with members Sandy West, Lita Ford, Jackie Fox and Cherie Currie. She was told to take all the profit from her solo music career but she turned this down because she wanted a band which became Joan Jett and The Blackhearts. She went on to become a producer for bands such as Bikini Kills and Circus Lupus and also did background vocals for them. She made appearances with many other bands like The Ramones, Sex Pistols and Foo Fighters. She also did some acting.
